Lafayette Leopards Women's Basketball vs. Colgate (01/16/2008)

Game 17
Lafayette vs. Colgate
January 16, 2008

For the second straight year the Lafayette women opened the Patriot League season with a victory, notching a 57-52 win over Colgate. Three Leopards scored in double figures, as juniors Cristin Zavocki and Jessica Spicer both had 13 on the night, with Vanessa Van de Venter chipping in 10. Though Lafayette stretched the lead to as much as 14 points in the opening half, the Leopards couldn't put away a scrappy Colgate squad that narrowed the margin to two with under five minutes to play. A string of Lafayette threes stemming from Elizabeth Virgin, Zavocki and Spicer pushed the lead to nine at the half, a 25-17 advantage. A LaKeisha Wright basket to open the half pushed the lead to ten, and the Leopards were able to maintain the double-digit lead until five minutes left in the game, when a furious Colgate run cut the lead to three with under a minute left on the clock. With three seconds left, Meaghan Malone grabbed an offensive board, was fouled and made two consecutive foul shots to guarantee the win. The win marked the most wins for the team in a season under the Tammy Smith era.
